Two new state-of-the-art computed tomography scanners at the Institutes of Radiology and Neuroradiology at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital now enable even more efficient and gentle diagnostics. The renovation also creates a more spacious and friendly atmosphere for patients and staff alike.
The new computed tomography (CT) center was put into operation at the beginning of April 2021, with two new CT scanners forming the centerpiece of the specially designed building section. The construction phase took two years. A total of around 4.3 million euros was invested. The CT scanners are used for a wide range of medical issues, especially in tumor medicine. However, the equipment will also be of great benefit to patients during the coronavirus pandemic.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Albrecht, Chief Physician at the Institute of Radiology at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital: "Patients with pneumonia caused by COVID-19 are often short of breath and cannot hold their breath well. The new computed tomography scanners deliver razor-sharp images despite the breathing movements. Thanks to special tin filters in the devices, patients are also exposed to significantly less radiation than before. The investment significantly advances the radiology department at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital."
Better characterization of tissue types
A special innovation used at the new CT center is the so-called dual energy technology. This technique allows radiologists to better characterize different tissues in the CT image. In addition, when using the Dual Energy technique, less contrast agent often needs to be administered.
High-resolution images of fast-moving organs
One of the new CT scanners also enables significantly improved images without blurring caused by fast-moving organs, such as the heart. This is because the device has two X-ray tube detector systems that circle around the patient at the same time. This means that examinations can be performed at twice the speed of conventional systems.
