Vivantes Neukölln Hospital Awarded as European Stroke Center

Neukölln is home to one of the largest certified stroke units in Germany

Vivantes Neukölln Hospital has been awarded as a certified "ESO Stroke Centre" in October 2021. The European Stroke Organization (ESO for short) awarded the certificate for three years. The award from the professional association ESO stands for a particularly high quality of treatment for patients with strokes.

One of the largest certified stroke units in Germany

With a total of 16 monitoring stations, the Neukölln stroke unit is one of the largest certified treatment units in Germany.

Prof. Dr. Darius Günther Nabavi, Head Physician of the Clinic for Neurology with Stroke Unit, Vivantes Neukölln Hospital: "We are proud of this award from the European professional association ESO. In the Stroke Unit at Neukölln Hospital, we can monitor and treat people who have suffered a fleeting or full-blown stroke around the clock. Not only lysis therapy, but also so-called thrombectomy is available 24 hours a day. Each year, we treat a total of about 1,500 people with strokes."

High quality of care through networking

Six hospitals have joined forces in the interdisciplinary Neurovascular Network to ensure treatment of strokes and all other vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord at the highest level. The coordinating center is Vivantes Neukölln Hospital. Partner clinics are Vivantes Auguste-Viktoria Hospital, Vivantes Humboldt Hospital, Vivantes Spandau Hospital, DRK Kliniken Berlin Köpenick and Ruppiner Kliniken.

In addition to acute stroke, the Neurovascular Network treats a variety of highly complex vascular diseases of the central nervous system, such as cerebral artery aneurysms, fistulas and arteriovenous vascular anomalies. The Neurovascular Network has been certified by three neuromedical societies and TÜV-Rheinland.

One of three Berlin stroke mobiles stationed in Neukölln

A stroke emergency mobile (STEMO) is stationed at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital. The specially equipped rescue vehicles make it possible to treat people in the event of a stroke while they are still at the scene. Prof. Nabavi: "The most important factor in the acute care of stroke patients is time. The STEMO concept convinced us right from the start and was therefore fully supported by the whole team." There are three STEMOs in Berlin, operated by the Berlin Fire Department in cooperation with Charité, Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin and Vivantes Neukölln Hospital.
