Vivantes awarded by German Society for Thoracic Surgery!

Excellent Center for Thoracic Surgery

The Vivantes Clinic for Thoracic Surgery, under the direction of Chief Physician Dr. Stephan Eggeling, has been certified as a Center of Excellence by the German Society for Thoracic Surgery.  Apart from Vivantes Neukölln Hospital, there are only two other centers of excellence. Across Germany, a total of 16 hospitals are certified as centers of excellence for thoracic surgery.

Together with a certification company (Doc-Cert AG), the professional society examines a wide range of criteria relating to the quality of structure, process and - in contrast to many other certifications – the quality of outcomes in thoracic surgery patient care (for oncological and non-oncological diseases). From admission and indication, through therapy planning, patient information and education, then perioperative standards, to hygiene and documentation, and finally discharge and transfer management of patients, the processes are scrutinized.

Around 1,200 patients are treated annually in the Vivantes Clinic for Thoracic Surgery.

For a successful audit, the specialist and specialized care with interdisciplinary and inter-professional implementation must convince the audit team. It is also important to include diagnostic and therapeutic partners in the treatment.

Dr. Stephan Eggeling, Chief Physician of the Vivantes Clinic for Thoracic Surgery in Neukölln: "The great commitment of my teams has paid off, I am happy and proud that we now hold the certification as a Center of Excellence and can give patients guidance in their choice of clinic! With around 1000 operations a year, we have a very high level of expertise in the field of thoracic surgery. In addition, however, the audit also examined and evaluated OR reports, pathology findings, conference protocols and discharge letters."

In contrast to the competence center, the center of excellence has an exceptional number of patients or case numbers and thus a particularly high level of experience as well as proven contributions to the further development of the specialty on a national and international level (with regard to research and corresponding publications). In addition, the Vivantes Clinic for Thoracic Surgery is particularly dedicated to the continuing education and training of its staff.

Background:

The Clinic for Thoracic Surgery has been a certified DKG Lung Cancer Center since 2012 and has been re-certified as a Lung Cancer Center across multiple sites together with Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital since 2018. The initial certification as an Oncology Center of the German Cancer Society of Neukölln Hospital took place in 2021. Neukölln Hospital also became a center in the National Genomic Network in 2021, in which otherwise only university hospitals are represented. In addition, the Neukölln site is a silver-certified smoke-free hospital of the German Network of Smoke-Free Hospitals (DNRfK). Neukölln Hospital is a maximum-care hospital with 1,296 beds and 20 specialist departments, in which 520 physicians, 1,123 nursing staff and 434 functional service staff provide inpatient care to over 125,000 patients per year.

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
