Side effects are no side issue: 14th Berlin Cancer Congress

How can people with cancer continue to live as well as possible? How are side effects and consequences of cancer therapies treated today? The 14th Berlin Cancer Congress "Life Change - Cancer - Quality of Life" from May 25 - 26, 2018 at the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Stiftung in Berlin-Mitte will address the latest scientific findings and advances in cancer medicine.

Berlin's largest hospital group is treating more and more cancer patients and has opened four new oncology facilities in the last three years.

Free patient congress

Environmental influences, nutrition in cancer, sports and other topics on lifestyle and quality of life in cancer will already be discussed on May 24 at the preceding free patient congress. Experts will give keynote speeches and answer questions.

No longer a side issue: rethinking side effects

Nausea, malnutrition, blood count changes, fatigue, hair loss – these are just some of the most common side effects caused by cancer therapies. Prof. Dr. Petra Feyer, Director of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital and Congress President of the 14th Berlin Cancer Congress, reports here in an interview on how side effects can be much better alleviated today through supportive therapies.

More cancer patients

A total of about 15,000 people are newly diagnosed with cancer in Berlin every year. Vivantes treats about one in four cancer cases in Berlin. The number of cancer patients treated as inpatients and outpatients at Vivantes rose to a total of 23,233 in 2017: 11,411 affected patients were treated as inpatients (2016: 11,025) and 11,822 were treated as outpatients at Vivantes' medical care centers (2016: 10,326). Many oncology patients are treated for years.

Four new oncology facilities in three years

In the past three years, the Berlin hospital company Vivantes has opened new oncology clinics at three hospital locations: since April 2018, there has been a new oncology clinic at the Vivantes Auguste-Viktoria Hospital in Berlin-Schöneberg, since May 2016, there has been a clinic for oncology at the Vivantes Humboldt Hospital in Reinickendorf, and since July 2015, there has been the MVZ Charité Vivantes Radiation Therapy at the Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital, as well as a new oncology focus at the Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital since April 2015.

Berlin Cancer Congress already for the 14th time

The 14th Berlin Cancer Congress is organized by the Vivantes Tumor Center and is under the patronage of the Berlin Cancer Society. The congress presidents are Prof. Dr. Petra Feyer, Director of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radiooncology at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital, Prof. Dr. Maike de Wit, Chief Physician of the Clinic for Internal Medicine - Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital and Co-Congress President is Susanne Brandis, Chief Physician of Oncology at Vivantes Rehabilitation.

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
