PD Dr. Christoph Benckert heads the Vivantes Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery

New Head of Department and Chief Physician of Surgery in Spandau

As of October 01, 2021, PD Dr. Christoph Benckert is the new head of the Department of Surgery as well as chief physician of the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery at Vivantes Spandau Hospital. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Köckerling.

PD Dr. Christoph Benckert was most recently and since 2016 senior consultant and deputy chief physician of the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery at Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital.

Fast recovery after surgery

The newly established clinic offers patients* the entire spectrum of visceral surgery. In close cooperation with other professional groups and specialties such as gastroenterology, anesthesiology, interventional radiology and oncology, the new chief physician plans to expand oncological surgery and implement the so-called ERAS concept ("enhanced recovery after surgery") for accelerated recovery.

PD Dr. Christoph Benckert, Chief Physician of the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery in Spandau: "I am pleased to remain a part of the Vivantes family and to further expand oncological surgery here in Spandau. Through close interdisciplinary collaboration, I plan to establish concepts for rapid convalescence after abdominal surgery here at the site that are individually tailored to the needs of our patients."

PD Dr. Christoph Benckert studied human medicine at the Free University of Berlin from 1991 to 1998, with study visits to New York, New Orleans and Edinburgh.

From 1998 to 2007, he completed his surgical residency at Charité Berlin. From 2008 to 2013, he worked as a senior physician at the Clinic for Visceral, Transplant, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at Leipzig University Hospital.

From 2014 to 2016, he was a senior physician at the Clinic for General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery at Magdeburg University Hospital before joining Vivantes.

Background:

The newly established Department of Surgery at Vivantes Spandau Hospital is divided into the Clinic for General and Visceral Surgery headed by PD Dr. Christoph Benckert, the Center for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery headed by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ordemann, and the Clinic for Vascular Surgery headed by Prof. Dr. Carsten Bünger.

The Vivantes Spandau Hospital is a hospital providing specialized care with around 600 beds. Around 25,000 patients are treated here every year. The Spandau Hospital is an academic teaching hospital of the Charité Berlin.
