Interdisciplinary treatment from childhood to old age: In August 2020, four professional societies awarded certification as a continence and pelvic floor center to a total of eight specialized clinics as well as the physiotherapy and nursing departments at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital.
The special feature of the Neukölln Continence and Pelvic Floor Center: All age groups are treated - children with nocturnal enuresis, for example, as well as geriatric patients with continence problems.
From incontinence to consequences of accidents - supraregional demand
The most common diagnoses are urinary and fecal incontinence, a so-called unstable bladder or sequelae of cancer therapy. Consequences of accidents to the bony pelvis are also discussed in conferences - a nationwide speciality, also because so many specialized clinics are involved.
Every patient case is discussed together
PD Dr. med. Uwe Torsten, head physician of the Clinic for Gynecology and head of the center: "Every fourteen days, we discuss the cases of our patients in an interdisciplinary manner at a pelvic floor conference with the eight cooperating clinics and physiotherapy. In this way, we determine the best individual therapy all together."
Conservative therapies are the first choice
Surgical intervention is always the last option in the treatment chain. The focus is on conservative therapies. Patients also come to the center from outside the region, with a total of between 160 and 320 individual cases a year.
Physicians are specialized
The award certifies: Diagnostics and therapy are coordinated on an interdisciplinary basis for the individual and carried out bindingly in accordance with national guidelines. This also means that, in order to be certified, the medical specialists must have special specialist requirements, which they must demonstrate annually.
Special requirements also for nursing and physiotherapy
The Clinic for Gynecology, together with its cooperation partners, has now been awarded the certificate for the fourth time in a row according to the joint criteria of the German Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics, the German Society for Urology, the German Continence Society and the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery. In addition to the Clinic for Gynecology, the Clinic for Neurology, the Clinic for Trauma Surgery, the Clinic for Surgery, the Clinic for Urology, the Clinic for Neurosurgery, the Clinic for Radiology and Interventional Therapy, and the Clinic for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine with the Center for Social Pediatrics and Neuropediatrics as well as Nursing and Physical Therapy are involved.
