World Brain Tumor Day 2016 - New Therapy Offer of Neurosurgery at Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital

On June 8, World Brain Tumor Day will take place, which has been organized for sixteen years by the German Brain Tumor Aid Association (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe e.V.). On this occasion, the Department of Neurosurgery at Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital will provide information about a gentle additional treatment offered to selected patients for malignant brain tumors. This treatment uses "internal heat" to combat the tumor.

In so-called "NanothermTherapy®", the tumor cavity is lined with iron-containing nanoparticles during microneurosurgery or they are stereotactically introduced directly into the tumor focus. Simultaneously with subsequent radiotherapy, these iron particles can be heated by magnetic excitation. This prevents the tumor cells from growing further. Neurosurgical treatment is performed before and after tumor surgery in interdisciplinary cooperation with radiology, nuclear and intensive care medicine, and the Department of Radiation Therapy of the Charité at the Virchow Clinic.

Prof. Dr. Dag Moskopp, Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Vivantes Friedrichshain Hospital: "I am pleased that we can now offer this form of treatment outside of studies in collaboration with the Charité's Department of Radiation Therapy.  We want to offer patients with incurable brain tumors, such as glioblastomas, an option for an additional treatment principle besides surgery, radiation and chemotherapy through the application of regional heat. Each routine patient will receive the same attention from us as study patients would otherwise receive."

Background:

"NanothermTherapy®" was developed by the medical technology company MagForce AG in cooperation with Charité. This therapy currently has EU-wide certification and CE approval for the treatment of all brain tumors.

The therapy uses so-called ferrofluid (liquid containing iron oxide that reacts to a magnetic field) made of nanoparticles. The particles are on average 15 nanometers in size. The nanoparticles can be introduced during a microsurgical operation or via a targeting procedure (stereotaxy).

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
