New outpatient clinic for nuclear medicine in Kreuzberg closes gap in care

Outpatient nuclear medicine diagnostics and cancer treatments have not been available in Kreuzberg in recent years - now a nuclear medicine MVZ (medical care center) outpatient clinic has opened at Vivantes Hospital „Am Urban“, closing this gap in care.

PD Dr. Michail Plotkin, Head of Nuclear Medicine at Vivantes: "Kreuzberg patients will benefit from the expansion and modernization of nuclear medicine. We are closing a local gap in care, especially in the diagnosis of thyroid diseases and in cancer diagnostics and nuclear medicine therapy." Therefore, a great demand for nuclear medicine examinations on the part of patients is expected.

This is because not only oncological patients are examined and treated here using nuclear medicine, but diagnostics of the thyroid, lungs, kidneys and skeletal system are also possible. The offer of outpatient nuclear medicine thyroid diagnostics is of particular importance because Vivantes Hospital „Am Urban“ has recently opened a new center for endocrine surgery, where many thyroid operations are performed.

Previously, inpatient nuclear medicine diagnostics had been available at the hospital site for about 20 years. Now the technical equipment there has been modernized and the range of services expanded.

New high-tech therapy for patients with prostate cancer and bone metastases

New in Kreuzberg, for example, is outpatient radionuclide therapy for bone metastases in prostate cancer (known as Xofigo therapy). This novel therapy was only approved in 2014 and can also help patients for whom the usual hormone therapy has proven to be no longer effective. For targeted internal radiation, a radioactively labeled radioisotope (alpha emitter) is administered intravenously, which then specifically targets the bone metastases: the radioisotope tracks down the cancer cells and irradiates them directly inside the body - with a radius of just one-tenth of a millimeter. Unlike chemotherapy, this spares other dividing cells in the body. The radioactivity is then broken down by the body itself and largely excreted in the stool.

Radioactive beads specifically damage liver tumors

Another example of targeted outpatient radionuclide therapy, which has already been performed at Vivantes Hospital „Am Urban“ for two years, is the so-called SIRT therapy for patients with malignant liver tumors. Here, too, a radioactive drug in the form of tiny glass beads is introduced into the patient's hepatic artery via a catheter for internal radiation treatment. The beads are absorbed by the tumor cells and specifically damage the malignant tumor by interrupting its blood supply, thereby shrinking the tumor. This highly complex treatment is carried out jointly by the three specialist disciplines of radiology, nuclear medicine and gastroenterology.

Three locations: Vivantes Institute for Nuclear Medicine Mitte-Nord

The Vivantes Institute for Nuclear Medicine Mitte-Nord treats patients at three locations in Berlin: In addition to the expanded facility in Kreuzberg with nuclear medicine diagnostics, there is a nuclear medicine department at Vivantes MVZ Spandau and Vivantes MVZ Friedrichshain. The MVZ Friedrichshain has combined PET-CT and SPECT-CT scanners. These devices overlay computer tomograms with nuclear medicine PET and SPECT images and thus offer state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures for the diagnosis of many benign and malignant diseases.

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
