The Clinic for Neurology at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital was certified by the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) as the only MS focus center in the Group as of July 1, 2020. Among other things, this certifies that the clinic has a high number of cases and the highest level of diagnostic and therapeutic care. The clinic with its special outpatient clinic, which was established in 2010, was certified as a regional MS center as early as July 2018.
Prerequisite for certification are strict award criteria, which were developed with internationally leading MS experts. These include continuous patient care, standardized reporting and documentation, guideline-based treatment concepts for relapse therapy, long-term immunotherapy and symptom treatment. Furthermore, there is a close cooperation with the DMSG and the documentation for the German MS Registry. The medical team around chief physician Prof. Dr. Darius Nabavi could convince with all criteria.
Prof. Dr. Darius Nabavi, head physician of the Clinic for Neurology at the Vivantes Neukölln Hospital: "The certification as an MS focus center is a wonderful confirmation of our work in the past years, in which we have consistently developed our MS expertise. At the same time, we see it as an incentive to expand our range of treatments in the future and to further strengthen our network with colleagues in private practice".
Diagnosis and needs-based therapy in the specialized MS outpatient clinic
In the specialized MS outpatient clinic (§ 116b), which has been established since 2010, patients receive individualized therapy adapted to the current course of the disease and the personal needs of those affected.
Dr. Dieter Bähr, Head of the MS Special Outpatient Clinic and Deputy Chief Physician of the Clinic for Neurology at the Vivantes Neukölln Hospital: "The certification is a great honor for our team, but above all for our patients who are treated in our special outpatient clinic. They can once again rely on receiving the best possible care in this complex disease".
In addition to diagnostic confirmation, the special outpatient clinic for MS also offers relapsing treatments, which in severe cases can even be carried out with a plasma replacement procedure ("blood washing") under controlled inpatient conditions. In addition to standardized therapy monitoring, frequent symptoms such as spasticity and bladder dysfunction or walking disorders are treated in a complaints-oriented manner and appropriate aids and remedies are prescribed. There is also the possibility to participate in clinical studies.
Multiple Sclerosis - a mysterious disease: Young women most frequently affected
If the immune system is misdirected, this can lead to a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Areas in the brain and spinal cord can be damaged. The causes of the disease are not known with certainty. MS is particularly common in young adults between the ages of 20 and 40. Women are more frequently affected than men. The course of the disease is very variable, with MS often progressing in relapses and less frequently in a slow and gradual manner (primarily progressive MS).
