New Liver Center South at Vivantes Hospital Neukölln: Specialists work hand in hand

Better care for patients with liver and bile duct diseases in the south of Berlin: The "Liver Center South" is being established at Vivantes Hospital Neukölln. On the initiative of the head physician of the Clinic for Surgery - Minimally Invasive Surgery and Visceral Surgery Priv.-Doz. Dr. Mario Müller, the center is being established.

At the Vivantes Liver Center South, physicians specializing in liver diseases from various disciplines work closely together to develop an optimally coordinated concept for diagnosis and therapy for each patient. To this end, surgeons, gastroenterologists, oncologists and radiologists coordinate with each other.

For tumor diseases such as

  • primary liver tumors (HCC)
  • liver metastases or
  • bile duct tumors

as well as for other diseases of the liver and bile ducts such as

  • acute and chronic viral hepatitis
  • diffuse liver diseases, including cirrhosis
  • portal hypertension
  • refractory ascites or
  • esophageal and gastric varices

there is a wide spectrum of treatment methods. Excellent medical technology equipment is available at the Neukölln Hospital. Special focus of the center is on minimally invasive surgical, endoscopic and interventional radiological procedures.

Chief physician Dr. Mario Müller:"The liver can recover from many forms of damage if liver disease is recognized and treated. However, if liver disease is not treated, permanent liver damage can result. But we can also help these patients and at least improve the liver's then impaired detoxification capacity."

The Liver Center South's kick-off event on May 11, 2016 will be attended by a visitor from the USA: renowned liver surgeon Prof. Dr. Claudius Conrad from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston/Texas - the largest cancer center in the world - will give a lecture on the topic of "Minimally invasive liver surgery - Ready for Primetime?". At the continuing education event, physicians from Neukölln Hospital will also present the hospital's most important innovations and provide an overview of standards and future prospects for primary liver carcinomas and colorectal liver metastases.

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
