German Cancer Society certifies interdisciplinary colorectal cancer center

Center at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital receives award

The interdisciplinary colorectal cancer center at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital has been certified by the German Cancer Society. Patients with colorectal cancer are treated by the departments of surgery in sooperation with gastroenterology, oncology, radiotherapy, pathology and radiology, thus providing interdisciplinary care. The certificate was awarded on March 06, 2019.

Interdisciplinary management

The new center is managed interdisciplinarily by three chief physicians: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Böcker (Internal Medicine - Gastroenterology, Diabetology and Hepatology), Prof. Dr. Maike de Wit (Internal Medicine - Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Medicine) and PD Dr. Mario Müller (Surgery - Minimally Invasive Surgery and Visceral Surgery).

In 2017, 92 patients with a newly diagnosed colorectal carcinoma were treated in accordance with the quality requirements of the German Cancer Society; in 2018, the number was already 109.

PD Dr. Mario Müller, Chief Physician of the Clinic for Surgery - Minimally Invasive Surgery and Visceral Surgery at Vivantes Neukölln Hospital and one of the three heads of the new center:"In our interdisciplinary colorectal cancer center, we offer patients with colorectal cancer medical care of the highest scientific standard. That also means, for example, that we participate in studies when new therapies are developed."

Not only procedures and follow-up care improved

To meet certification requirements, many aspects of oncology treatments have been improved and expanded in recent months: Procedures in diagnostics, tumor conferences, surgical care and nursing patient care have been standardized.

Structures for guideline-compliant aftercare have also been created. In addition to high-level medical care, the center also cooperates with psychooncologists, social services, physiotherapists, trained stoma therapists, nutritionists, self-help groups, pain therapists and geneticists.

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
