15th Berlin Cancer Congress starts on May 23, 2019 with patient day

The ten most common types of cancer treated at Vivantes

Lung cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer are the most common tumors treated at Vivantes in Berlin. This is one of the findings of the Vivantes Cancer Report 2017/2018, which will be published to coincide with the 15th Berlin Cancer Congress. After the patient day on May 23, the specialist congress will take place on May 24 and 25, 2019, at the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Haus in Berlin Mitte. The main topic is "Visceral Oncology in the Age of Quality Offensive".

In 2018, patients with the main diagnosis of "cancer" were treated a total of 20,171 times at the three oncology centers of Berlin's largest healthcare provider. In 2017, there were 19,439 cancer treatments. Some sufferers were hospitalized more than once.

Ten most common malignant tumor types treated as main diagnoses at Vivantes in 2018:

  1. Lung - 2,347 cases (11.6% of cases in 2018).
  2. Urinary bladder - 2,100 (10.4%)
  3. Prostate - 1,930 (9.6%)
  4. Basal cell carcinoma (white skin cancer) - 1,806 (9.0%)
  5. Breast - 1,113 (5.5%)
  6. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - 972 (4.8%)
  7. Colon - 716 (3.5%)
  8. Metastases to the lung and digestive organs - 583 (2.9%)
  9. Lip, mouth and throat - 518 (2,6%)
  10. Malignant melanoma (black skin cancer) - 508 (2.5%)

A distinction is made between approximately 60 different main cancer diagnoses in the Vivantes Cancer Report. More than 110 of the Group's total of 124 clinics, specialist departments and institutes are involved in cancer care. This also shows how interdisciplinary the treatment in the network is.

More initial cancer diagnoses in Berlin

According to the joint cancer registry,an average of around 17,800 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in Berlin each year from 2012 to 2013. This does not include white skin cancer. In 2018, the cancer registry assumes about 19,000 new cases of cancer.

Lifestyle and cancer? Patients ask, doctors answer

The 15th Berlin Cancer Congress begins one day before the specialist congress with a patient day. There, "lifestyle" topics will be in the foreground: interested parties can discuss cancer and nutrition, alcohol, sports, stoma care, wound healing disorders and psycho-oncology with physicians.

More quality in cancer medicine - how do we achieve it?

This year's congress on May 24 and 25, 2019, will be held under the motto "Visceral Oncology in the Age of the Quality Offensive".

Congress presidents Priv.-Doz. Dr. Mario Müller and Prof. Dr. Martin Loss: "In the oncological care of our patients, quality assurance is becoming increasingly important, and the treatment of cancer patients at specialized centers is coming more and more to the fore. Health policy issues such as minimum volumes, certification and centralization of care structures are also at stake. Of course, this also applies to our main topic: visceral oncology in the age of the quality offensive."

The undetected
There are diseases that only become known because a celebrity is affected by them. One example is oral cavity carcinoma, which recently claimed the life of the well-known actor Jan Fedder. If it is discovered at an early stage, it is usually curable.
